Adding Joy #MLSTL

choose joy

At the beginning of 2018 I wrote these words about choosing three words for 2018 – Authentic, Action, and Joyful.

As I sat scrolling through my emails, I read an email about a lady that switched from choosing one word to focus on in the new year – to three words, as recommended by Chris Brogan.

What a great idea! For several years I’ve read of people choosing one word. But with my Gemini spirit trying to travel in a multitude of directions, choosing just one never seemed to quite fit what my goals were for the year. If many different writing and career goals weren’t enough, when you add in the additional layers of mind-body-spirit that I’d like to improve, I never found one word to do the whole job.

I like the three word idea. The three words I’m choosing on for 2018 are ‘Authentic‘, ‘Action‘, and ‘Joyful.’ These three words will encompass my goals for the year, both in business and in my personal life.

Here we are starting July and the year is half way over. Each day I see these three words that are on a Post-It note on my monitor. Yet…I don’t really ‘see’ these word each day. Do you have the same problem – once something is in a place for a bit, you never really see it? Oh, a few times a week I notice it, but usually it become invisible for most of the time I spend in front of the computer screen.

As we’re halfway through the year, I ponder about how well I’ve incorporated these three words into my life so far in 2018. I’m happy with authentic. I think that a majority of my decisions and actions have been authentic with the true person I am. I’m happy with action. I’ve made some huge strides this year towards the goals I’ve set for myself. Joyful? Now on that one I’m not as pleased with my progress. The past two month especially, have been crazy and frantic as I’ve made steps towards where I want to be in life with this turning of the meter going to 60. Yet joyful has been painfully absent from too many of my days.

Luckily there’s still half a year ahead of us. Now I need to make a conscious effort to incorporate more joy into every day.

Have you ever had a ‘word of the year?’ Were you able to consistently incorporate it into you daily life? What was the words you’ve chosen?

I have participated in the Word of the Year for the past several years. Some of the words I focused on were: balance – peace – delight – fun – and space. The word that I was most able to consistently incorporate into my daily life was “nourish” In fact, I am considering reusing that my word in 2019.

What wonderful words you’ve chosen through the years Molly! I love all of them – especially balance and peace. But I think my favorite is nourish, because you can use that in so many ways. Nourish can apply to body, spirit, and soul and oh my – what a joy that would be to nourish all parts of yourself. I may borrow your word for next year!

Hi Trisha Faye, great to have you join us at #MLSTL. My word for the year was Thrive and I suppose I have cheated a little as I am reminded each week of ways we can Thrive through my guests in the Over 50 & Thriving Series. Generally I do believe I’m progressing well as I head to 61. I have found though that life can get in the way and we need to re-assess frequently. I also agree about not seeing things like your post-it note after a while. I get the feeling you are doing well at your half way mark and I have my grandsons to constantly remind me of the Joy I have in my life. Have a beautiful day, Trisha Faye xx

It’s so true about needing to re-assess frequently. Especially after we go through a round of ‘real life’ that can set us back or send us on an unexpected whirlwind trip now and then.
Thanks for all your inspiration Sue!

I love the word of the year concept Trisha – mine for this year was “Rise” (I could never come up with THREE!) and I’ve just written a post for later in the month where I look back on it and review my progress – much like you’re doing today. I found last year and this year that my word’s meaning morphed over time – I find that really interesting and it’s something I quite like about the process (always evolving). BTW you’ll have to read Janet’s post on Joy that was linked today – it might inspire you x

Thanks for linking up with us at #MLSTL and I’ve shared this on my SM xx

I can’t wait to read your post coming up on ‘rise’ Leanne! I like your phrase about ‘always evolving’. Yes, that’s true, isn’t it.
      Have a wonderful day!

Hi Trisha Faye, I used Chris Brogan’s three words technique for years and really liked it. And I found that with three words, I was usually doing something related to at least one of the words so I felt like I was on track with my goals.
The last couple of years I’ve been using one word and, like you, keep going blind to it. This year’s word in particular stays in my brain but it’s not in my daily actions. However, I’ve got plans to change that for the second half of the year. I agree that it’s so lucky to still have time – in your case to be ‘joyful’, in mine to ‘notice.’

What a wonderful word – notice. I love that! Good luck with having your word become more relevant in your life during the second part of the year.

I didn’t officially choose words but I have three that stand out: travel, exercise, and writing. And it’s true I couldn’t just live with one word for the whole year.
