NATIONAL PIEROGY DAY

Monday, October 8th: Today celebrates tasty European goodies. It’s NATIONAL PIEROGY DAY. I first tasted pierogies when my friend Mary, who is Polish, brought a dish to a potluck at work. I’ve been hooked on these tasty dumplings since.

Pierogies are dumplings made with unleavened dough. Mmmmm, they’re stuffed with potato filling, meat, cheese or sauerkraut. I’ve seen fruit filled pierogy also, but haven’t tasted any so I can’t vouch for those. I may have to remedy that with today’s celebration.

Mrs. T’s Pierogies sponsors today’s celebration. The date “commemorates the day in 1952 that pierogies were first delivered to a grocery store in Shenandoah, PA—marking the emergence of the traditionally eastern European food as a mainstream American meal staple.”

Here’s some delicious recipes to make pierogies. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/pierogies/
