Day 1: Awareness and Education of Chemicals in Products
Day 2: Chemical Substitution for Home and Workplace
Day 3: Buy Less Toxic Cleaning Supplies or Make Your Own
Day 4: Alternative Yard Care Solutions
Day 5: Buy Local – Reduce Pesticides, Transportation Fuels, and GHGs

Day 3 (Wednesday) focuses on: Buy Less Toxic Cleaning Supplies or Make Your Own. Here are some tips on safe and easily available cleaning supplies for your home or business.

— Baking soda and water can be used instead of ammonia-based all-purpose cleaners.

— Within 26 seconds after exposure to chemicals such as those found in cleaning products, traces of these chemicals can be found in every organ in the body.

— Levels of volatile organic compounds, found in household cleaners and paints, can be up to ten times higher indoors than outdoors.

— Many cleaners also contain unnecessary pesticides that can make bacteria stronger and more resistant to antibacterial drugs.

— In side-by-side tests, cleaners using mixtures of vinegar, lemon juice or baking soda with water perform better than commercial cleaners.
