Day 4 (Thursday) focuses on: Alternative Yard Care Solutions. Here are some tips on safe and easily available cleaning supplies for your home or business.

— Over time, lawns and gardens using organic fertilizers or compost require less maintenance than those using chemicals.

— Suburban lawns and gardens receive more pesticide applications per acre (3.2-9.8 lbs. per acre on average) than agriculture (2.7 lbs. per acre on average). (1980 numbers)

— In 2004, more than 78 million American households used home and garden pesticides. Only 5 million American households used solely organic methods.

— Fertilizers account for 80 percent of the phosphate discharge to waterways.

Day 3 (Wednesday) focuses on: Buy Less Toxic Cleaning Supplies or Make Your Own. Here are some tips on safe and easily available cleaning supplies for your home or business.

— Baking soda and water can be used instead of ammonia-based all-purpose cleaners.

— Within 26 seconds after exposure to chemicals such as those found in cleaning products, traces of these chemicals can be found in every organ in the body.

— Levels of volatile organic compounds, found in household cleaners and paints, can be up to ten times higher indoors than outdoors.

— Many cleaners also contain unnecessary pesticides that can make bacteria stronger and more resistant to antibacterial drugs.

— In side-by-side tests, cleaners using mixtures of vinegar, lemon juice or baking soda with water perform better than commercial cleaners.
