A’s celebration is for AIR FORCE ACADEMY DAY

I’m participating in the ‘Blogging from A to Z April Challenge’. Everyday during April (except for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays) bloggers are blogging from ‘A’ to ‘Z’. I’ve searched for fun, funky and meaningful celebrations for the month to coincide with the alphabet letter for the day. Stop by every day and see what fun celebrations await you.

Sunday, April 1st: A’s celebration is for AIR FORCE ACADEMY DAY. No, It’s not an April Fools joke. Fifty-eight years ago today, our national Air Force Academy became formally official when President Dwight Eisenhower signed Public Law 325, 83rd Congress, 2nd Session. The anniversary day is now known as ‘Founders Day’ and is celebrated by graduate’s world wide.

The National Security Act of 1947 created an Air Force on equal footing with the Army and Navy. Establishing legislation was delayed by the Korean War, internal conflicts and other issues. In May 1953, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Dewey Short (Missouri) introduced House Resolution 5337, a bill “To Provide for the Establishment of aUnited StatesAirForceAcademy.” Hearings were postponed and the bill was finally passed on March 29, 1954. President Eisenhower signed the bill, and the rest, as they say, “is history”.

I’m, of course, partial to celebrating anything that honors our Air Force. My uncle served in the Air Force (although I wasn’t too happy when Uncle Sam “took” my favorite uncle away when I was a young child!) and now my son is currently in the Air Force (and now a Sergeant … HORRAY to my favorite airman … Sergeant Nance!). Today celebrates day dear to my heart. Here’s my own salute to the hundreds of thousands of airmen, past, present and future.
